18 watt with choke?‏
« am: 13.04.2016 00:36 »
I might want to order an 18 watts (from tubetown) kit soon. I was wondering if you can recommend the use of a choke in the power supply (if so, which one would work best in this case), or if that might be overkill/irrelevant.

Thanks a lot :)

Did the original Marshall 18W use a Choke? NO
It´s irrelevant.
Cheers

Good point, but for instance the vox ac15 (which has quite a similar output section as the 18watter) does use a choke. (At least the handwired reissue ones.)

Hallo,

if you have a strong feeling that you need to use a choke than feel free to use a choke. You will not damage anything.

Best regards, Dirk

Hi,

i tried a choke in my own 18W build and was not impressed, the Amp got too spongy and lost quite some of the gnarl so I switched back to the "normal" setup with a sag resistor...You will not harm anything when installing a choke but it will alter the behavior away from y typical 18W in an uncomfortable way...

just my 2c

Thanks for your answers. I'll try without the choke, might still add one afterwards :). Which one did you use, bluesfreak?

I need to check but if I recall correctly it was a 3H or 4H Classic Tone Version I had flying around. Considering Voltages and Currents in an 18W this one should do the trick: http://www.tube-town.net/ttstore/Transformatoren/Drosseln/Hammond-Guitar-Series/Hammond-194A-Drossel-Fender-125C3A-022707::2145.html?MODsid=o2a90d0acnp8d0m1dtn7d4cvj7
